Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination and Homophobia in schools and communities. We invite everyone to celebrate diversity by wearing a pink shirt and by organizing activities in their workplaces, organizations, communities and schools.
I Celebrate Diversity International Day of Pink - April 11, 2012
The International Day of Pink provides an annual opportunity to engage communities in standing up against discrimination and bullying, and showing support for diversity. As noted in the article that appeared in the February issue of Update, the Day of Pink arose out of an incident in Nova Scotia when a Grade 9 student faced homophobic bullying and threats of violence for wearing a pink shirt. The next day, hundreds of other students in the school showed up wearing their own pink shirts.
This event has become the inspiration for creating an annual day of action when people around the world are encouraged to wear pink as a symbol of their respect for diversity, and to organize other activities to raise awareness and encourage members of their communities to step up and make a difference in ending discrimination.
The Provincial Executive applauds these efforts and asks local OSSTF/FEESO leaders to encourage member recognition and support for the International Day of Pink in their schools and workplaces, as well as within OSSTF/FEESO. Please note that the date this year is April 11.
